Woman holding cheek due to tooth acheHere at Star City Dental, we can provide extractions for damaged and decayed teeth. Teeth extractions are considered a last resort by our dentists and are only usually performed when no other options are available. Extractions are a restorative dentistry procedure.

When You Need an Extraction

There are lots of reasons why you may need a tooth removed, but it is often performed if the tooth is presenting a risk to your health. Some people can find their new teeth are blocked from emerging by extra teeth, and sometimes baby teeth do not fall out and block the growth of permanent teeth. People getting orthodontic treatments may also need to have teeth extracted, allowing extra room for the teeth that are being realigned.

Medical problems can also mean extraction is required. Those receiving cancer drugs may suffer from infected teeth due to a weakened immune system, and people who have an organ transplant are at a higher risk of infection, which includes teeth infections.

Rarely does tooth decay result in extraction, but it can happen when tooth decay reaches the center of the tooth (the pulp), these bacteria can invade the pulp and cause an infection. A root canal is a more common procedure in these cases but, if the infection is severe extraction may be performed.

Wisdom teeth are a common extraction, especially in people in their late teens or early 20s. Wisdom teeth need to be removed if they are causing pain, are infected or are causing a cyst. Wisdom teeth can get stuck in the jaw (also called impacted) and do not properly come into the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, and gum irritation.

What to Expect

The first step is for our dentist or oral surgeon to take an x-ray of the problem area and assess the best way to remove the tooth. It is important you are upfront about your medical and dental history, including all the medication you are taking. You may find medical professionals prescribe antibiotics before and after surgery, especially if you have an infection or a weak immune system.

In a simple extraction, where the tooth is clearly visible, our dentist will loosen the tooth with a tool called an elevator and remove the tooth with forceps. For complex, surgical extractions, where a tooth has been broken off at the gumline, our doctor or dentist will make a small cut into your gum. They will widen the tooth socket and loosen the tooth before removing it. You may need a stitch in the empty socket to assist in the healing. It may also be necessary for some of the bone to be removed so that the tooth can be accessed to be extracted.

Most simple extractions are done with a local anesthetic, but for surgical extraction, you may be under a general anesthetic. Local anesthetic will be given either through injection or through IV. You may also be given steroids to help reduce swelling. Because of the pain medication, you should not feel any pain during the procedure, just a little pressure.

Once the extraction is complete, the doctor will discuss replacement options with you. Most of the time, we recommend dental implants as a permanent tooth restoration solution.
