Cavities can be quite a pain and the tricky thing about them is that you often only know about their existence when they have grown and started causing you pain. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a convenient and painless way to prevent cavities from being formed at all?
Fluoride treatment at Star City Dental can help strengthen the enamel in your teeth. Research shows that fluoride can help you reverse minor damage to enamel also by remineralizing your teeth.
What is Fluoride Treatment?
Fluoride is a mineral that can either be taken into our body through water or supplements or through topical application.
At Star City Dental, we offer topical application of fluoride to your teeth in the form of a varnish, toothpaste or mouth rinse.
If you are at high risk of cavities, a professional fluoride treatment can help you reduce the likelihood of tooth decay. The treatment is completely non-invasive and painless.
Dr. Melanie Fulton and Dr. Meghan Hungerford use a fluoride preparation that has higher concentration of fluoride than regular toothpastes. We will apply the fluoride preparation to your mouth with a brush or cotton swab or ask you to rinse your mouth with a fluoride solution. We may also prepare dental trays filled with fluoride solution which we may fit on your teeth for several minutes.
We may ask you not to eat or drink anything or rinse your mouth until at least 30 minutes after the treatment so that your teeth have sufficient time to absorb the fluoride. Depending on the health of your teeth, you may need to repeat fluoride treatment every three to 12 months.
Who is Eligible for Fluoride Treatment?
Any person over the age of two is a good candidate for fluoride treatment. Children who are younger should not be exposed to fluoride since it can lead to dental fluorosis, a condition that causes white striations to develop on children’s teeth. Therefore, pregnant women should avoid taking fluoride in the first trimester of their pregnancy.
Additionally, adults who are at risk of dental decay are good candidates for fluoride treatment, particularly:
