When you watch TV, see people at school or people you work with who have these perfect Hollywood teeth, you start to wonder. Am I doing something wrong that I get cavities and need crowns? Are my genes just lousy? Well, the answer to some of these questions could have a simple answer – veneers.
Veneers are one of the most useful and productive solutions now available to dentists. Veneers are wafer-thin coverings that fit over and adhere to your teeth. They look just like natural teeth and if you take care of them properly can last for a long time. They can be used for a variety of dental issues, but since they can chip or crack, if you grind or clench your teeth, we would recommend wearing a dental guard at night.
What Problems Can They Fix?
Veneers are made of two types of materials: porcelain or composite resin. Both are strong and last but there are differences. Porcelain veneers require that more enamel is taken from the tooth to ensure it adheres well. If they loosen, they must be replaced. Composite resin veneers require the removal of less enamel and they can be repaired. They are also less expensive than porcelain veneers.
Veneers are used for a variety of reasons. If you have teeth that are stained and are not candidates for the typical whitening methods like bleaching, you can get veneers instead. They will fit over your teeth and you are finished.
Veneers are ideal if you have a chipped tooth or worn teeth. They will fit right over the original tooth. It will retain its strength but will look far better. If you have crooked teeth or your teeth are misshapen veneers can be applied to correct the look of the problem. They will not fix it, but the crooked or misshapen tooth will no longer be visible.
Veneers are also used to fill uneven spaces or gaps in your front teeth. The veneer is made to be slightly wider than the tooth it fits over and the gap is gone. If you think you may have a problem veneers can fix, make an appointment. We'd be happy to take a look and advise you of your options.
